Outdoor Projects Before the Weather Turns
Early fall might be the best working weather of the year. The heat has broken, the humidity is gone, and there are still plenty of dry, mild days ahead. It is also the last stretch before temperatures drop low enough to make most exterior work difficult, or impossible, until spring.
If something outside has been on your list all summer, this is the time to get to it.
Paint and stain
Most exterior paints and stains need temperatures above roughly 50 degrees, both during application and overnight while they cure. In southeastern Wisconsin, that window starts to close by mid to late October. Touch up peeling trim, seal the deck, and repaint the front door while you still can. Check the label on whatever product you are using, since requirements vary.
Caulk and seal
Gaps around windows, doors, and where siding meets trim let in water and cold air. Fresh exterior caulk is inexpensive and goes on best in mild weather. It is one of the most useful hours you can spend on a house before winter.
Concrete and driveways
Cracks in a driveway or sidewalk fill with water, freeze, and grow larger every winter. Patching or sealing them in early fall stops that cycle before it starts. Larger concrete work also needs warm enough temperatures to cure properly, so it should not wait.
Trees and shrubs
Look for dead or overhanging branches near the roof, power lines, or the driveway. Heavy snow and ice bring them down, often at the worst possible moment. Fall is also a good time to plant trees and shrubs, while the soil is still warm and before the ground freezes.
Grading and drainage
Walk around the foundation after a good rain. If water pools near the house, the soil may need to be built back up so it slopes away. Fixing it now keeps spring meltwater out of the basement.
Decks, railings, and steps
Check for loose boards, wobbly railings, and protruding nails. Steps that are a little uneven in September become a real hazard once they are covered in ice.
